What started as a 3-month work contract turned into a 22-year love affair with Switzerland.

From 3 Months to Forever – My Swiss Journey

When I first landed in Switzerland from the UK, it was meant to be temporary—a short 3-month IT consulting contract based in Cham, Canton Zug. I was living out of a hotel room, counting down the days until the project ended.

But something unexpected happened.

As I began to explore during my weekends—visiting the calm blue waters of Lake Lucerne, the fairy-tale architecture of Lauterbrunnen, the peaceful trails above Mount Rigi, and the charming old towns of Bern and Lugano; I felt a shift. Deep down, I knew I had fallen in love.

Not just with the mountains or lakes, but with the people.

The Swiss were incredibly polite, welcoming, and helpful—something that surprised me coming from a big city culture. Their deep respect for nature, their love of local traditions, and the peaceful rhythm of daily life struck a chord in me.

That “temporary” contract? It got extended. Again. And again.

Fast forward 22 years, I’m now proudly naturalized and still living in Switzerland. And yes, I’m still in love with it.

Here’s why I never left—and why I believe every traveler should experience the true heartbeat of this country:

There’s Always Something to Celebrate

Switzerland is never boring. Between colorful local carnivals, festive Christmas markets, and cozy fondue nights in alpine huts, life here has a rhythm that feels just right. Whether you’re joining a spring parade in Basel, riding a historic boat across Lake Thun, or wandering through autumn vineyards in Lavaux, there’s always something to experience.

Nature Isn’t Just a View—It’s a Way of Life

Imagine waking up and having the option to hike along the Matterhorn, take a scenic train ride on the Bernina Express, or paddleboard across Lake Zurich. Switzerland's outdoors aren’t just beautiful—they're immersive. You live in them, breathe in the cleanest air, and feel instantly renewed.

Craving adrenaline? Try paragliding in Interlaken, skiing the slopes of Zermatt, or bungee jumping off the Verzasca Dam. Prefer something more relaxed? Explore medieval castles, unwind in a thermal spa in Bad Ragaz, or take a cheese-making tour in Gruyères.
